Newark Schools’ Chess Competition 2025-26

The Newark Schools’ Chess Competition has been running since 2008-09. Since the competition’s inception, Tallents Solicitors have sponsored the event.

After the competition restarted after a three year break caused by the pandemic, Sutton on Trent have been competition winners for three years in a row.

The competition has three events during the school year, one per term. The schools enter one or more teams consisting of four players, with each playing three games during the event. The points gained by each team over the three events are combined to give an overall winner. Trophies are awarded to the top three teams whilst any players winning all three games at one event are given a medal.

Last year seven local primary schools were involved: Barnby Road, John Blow Collingham, Highfields, Holy Trinity, Sutton on Trent, Donald Bailey and Farndon schools.

The dates and venues for this year’s competition are:

Tuesday 18 November 2025 held at YMCA Community and Activity Village

Tuesday 17 March 2025 held at Barnby Road school

Tuesday 19 May 2025 held at Holy Trinity school
